Opening: November 4, 2022 5-8 pm
A polaroid, an Instagram post, a disappearing Snapchat, the flash of light leaving an imprint on the retina. Images compose and capture the concrete and ephemeral experiences of our day-to-day lives.
Accessible to almost a fault, the photo is ripe with potential. This is why we are drawn to artists who address the history, the kitsch, and the possibility of photography while also pressing up against the matte, the frame, and the glass to propel the image into new avenues of expression. Afterimage 01: The Third Terrain brings together image-based artists who play with the materiality of photography and challenge the definitions and preconceived notions of the medium itself.
As a curatorial act, we aim to challenge how viewers approach mediums in an age of increased fluidity and multi-hyphenation. We also hope to develop ongoing programming to take place yearly/bi-yearly that addresses specific mediums: painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, etc, and the way contemporary artists are pushing against the limits of their chosen mediums. Ten artists were selected to offer their responses to the predicament of the image in our current discourses. Hasler Gomez and Todd Molinari will curate this exhibition A publication will accompany the exhibition. There will also be public programming events happening throughout the duration of the exhibit. More information to follow.
