Alexandra’s paintings communicate with fluid, dreamlike imagery: faces appear & fade through watery & overgrown mountainsides, imaginary plants unfurl their tendrils, otherworldly insects rendered in delicate detail appear ready to fly. painted at her home studio in Memphis, TN, her lush perspective invites us into the realm she calls the Haunted South: Memphis & its ancient trees/wilderness, & her childhood home of Hot Springs, Arkansas, where thermal waters flow from 47 springs on the slope of a small mountain, supplying legendary healing water to the community. her dedication to place, daily life, & self shine in these works~ invented botanicals stem from her deep knowledge as a gardener & keen observer of nature, while many figurative images emerge from her home library filled with poetry, science fiction, fantasy, & mysticism. the show title is a reference to Sylvia Plath's poem, Berck-Plage (1962).
“Making art is a spiritual practice; all it takes is an unselfconscious concentration, an exercise of free will. No tricks. My work is rarely preconceived mentally, rather, it is a reflection of my own spirit being constantly reborn and revealed to me through images that transcend language. It is during my creative process that I feel my fragmented Self come together. This is when I finally feel whole, and angels and demons within me collide, emerging before my eyes on paper. The reservoir inside us is bottomless and has the power to access all sorts of worlds, if we only trust the mystery." -Alexandra Eastburn
