Artist Statement
Home is not a house, it’s a hug, a handshake, a warm sleeping bag, a good book, a tree to climb, or a tasty cup of coffee. Home is where we go to recharge our love lights, so we can shine brightly together. Love is home. This art show is inspired by the do-it-yourselfers, the hairy fools, the hobo clowns, and the people of the Sunnyside neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. This neighborhood is a very important part of my personal history. I went through the gnar-gnar tornado of my twenties here, I got sober in my thirties here, I raised my son here, and fell into lots of love here. This is my home and I’m so grateful to share it with you. This wouldn’t feel like home without you. I use scrap wood and house paint to make these mini-monuments. These are the art supplies I learned to work with as I fixed up my homes here. Portland has changed a lot since I moved here in 2001, but I’ve seen some things stay the same. Someone is still playing music in the park, free boxes are still cardboard treasure chests, people still greet each other on the street, the rain still falls on us all, and the rainbows still keep our chins up. Plus, this coffee shop is still here full of the sweetest people who are willing to share sincerity if you are.
