Glint, Glimmer, Glow, Kathryn Cellerini Moore ✨⛓️💥⛓️
📍700 SW Madison Avenue, Corvallis, OR, 97333
🗓️May 16-June 29, 2024
⏳Tuesday-Saturday 12-5pm
Glint, Glimmer, Glow is an experiment. A proof of concept. A statement about protecting our Earth. An exhibit inspired by the physics of #solarwind, powered by solar energy. It shows what is possible when members of the community work toward a common goal.
The moving images include auroras, microorganisms, and landscape vignettes. To juxtapose galactic-scale natural phenomena occurring alongside the microscopic producers who are the foundation of Earth’s complex ecosystem, is a reminder that we have always been interconnected.
The #auroras’ subliminal presence has influenced human culture for centuries, historically inspiring origin stories and continuing to inspire cautionary tales. The undulating lights of the auroras are projected onto chainmail, a metal fabric designed by humans to protect human bodies. The chainmail has been woven together in banded tapestries emulating shapes of auroras and serving as a metaphor for Earth’s own semi-permeable electromagnetic armor.
In partnership with The Art Center and The Design for Social Impact Initiative at Oregon State University, a team of engineering students from Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing Engineering, collaborated with us to design, prototype, and build the renewable energy system that not only powers the exhibit, but is a visible part of the show.
The physical integration of the energy system’s hardware into the design of the installation elevates the energy source as a vital part of the conversation. Using both recycled and new materials to craft the system, our goal is a net-zero exhibition experience. There is an urgent need for engineers, artists, community members, and funders to create solutions for powering our arts and cultural institutions using renewable energy. Our team is at the forefront of this challenge offering a possible solution for other cities and institutions to build from.

Cuts Across: Artists Respond to Lived Intersections
📍Carnation Contemporary
🗓️May 4-25
Cuts Across: Artists Respond to Lived Intersections, a show curated by Carnation Contemporary members Quinha Faria, Pamela Hadley, Marcelo Fontana and Michael Espinoza, asks Oregon artists to respond to a deceptively complicated question: how do you identify? The purpose of this show is to mine the rich layers of identity to uncover how artists respond to the pressure to perform isolated aspects of whole selves. This is an opportunity to build community around the expression of intersecting identities and showcase the diversity of Oregon artists and their practices. This show is supported by the Ford Family Foundation allowing us to lower cost and other barriers to create a platform for artists who may have previously been excluded from showing work in a gallery setting.
Participating artists are Wayne Bund, Dante Carlos, Francis Dot, Hale Ekinci, Sally Finch, Nancy Floyd, Erin Fox, Hyun Jung Jung, Frankie Krupa-Vahdani, Latoya Lovely, Christina Martin, Elise Azam Mravunac, M Prull, Jennifer Rabin, Joshua Sin, Victoria Smits, Ash Stone, Forest Svendgard-Lang, Noa Taylor, Chris Ticas, Ahuva S. Zaslavsky, and Yuyang Zhang.

🗓️May 2-June 1
⏳Tuesday-Saturday 11 am—5:30 pm
An Excerpt from the Artist’s Statement: In this ongoing study (Detritivore), artists have allowed me into their studios to explore and photograph the by-products and minutia of their artmaking process. The focus of this work is to bring to light the unintentional visual outcomes that manifest through the passion and energy of each artist’s practice. As artists, the tools we use, surfaces we work on, and scraps we produce take on a history, character, and visual allure of their own. They are incidental works of art that are the process itself. They are vital to the final result, yet are not part of the finished work.

Nathaniel C. Praska, By the Skin of Our Teeth
🗓️On view: May 2 - May 31, 2024
✨Opening Reception: First Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 6- 9 pm
⏳Regular Gallery hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-8 pm (additional hours to be posted shortly)
📍Address: 735 SW 9th Ave #110 Portland, OR 97205
📱Virtual Viewing Room: https://tinyurl.com/MPAC-viewing
after / time in association with MinEastry of Postcollapse Art and Culture, presents a solo exhibition of works by Nathaniel C. Praska.
By the Skin of Our Teeth 🦷 presents scenes of difficulty, if not disaster, and the objects left behind as records of bare survival. Inspired by a popular American idiom and biblical reference, the title of the exhibition calls attention to both human frailty and fortitude. Formulating a critique of the power over life, the works on display confront the pervasiveness of a destructive politics that molds landscapes into realms where personhood is stripped away and existence is reduced to mere survival. Depicting a kind of living against the odds, Praska’s oeuvre represents the volatility of the present amidst dire circumstances, calling into question the meaning and security of home, nature, and nurture.
Through a series of large-scale oil canvases, Praska’s works appear disconcertingly calm. The objects in sight become records of life: a rundown red Bronco, an old gray muffler, a still excavator. The rough outlines of the hand-made oil sticks and the gritty texture of the repurposed canvases emphasize the uncanniness of the surroundings: off-the-grid forests, an isolated trailer, vacant faces. These spaces, both as homely sites and as hostile spaces to endure, confront viewers in an eye-to-eye meeting with the present. Why now? Why here?

Arches (and apertures), Terry Toedtemeier
@pdxcontemporaryart
May 1-June 1, 2024
Toedtemeier was an accomplished photographer whose work was deeply informed by his study of the geology of the Northwest. For more than thirty years he studied the history of photography in the American West, with a particular focus on the photography of the Columbia River Gorge. Toedtemeier was a founder of Portland’s photography gallery Blue Sky Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts with Ann Hughes, Christopher Rauschenberg, Craig Hickman, and Robert DiFranc. A decade later he became the first curator of photography at the Portland Art Museum. Toedtemeier passed away in December 2008, while making a presentation of “Wild Beauty” a major exhibition of historic Columbia River Gorge photography he curated at the Portland Art Museum with an accompanying book published with John Laursen.
“Although he traveled to other basalt-rich regions, Terry Toedtemeier never found a place that rivaled his beloved home state of Oregon. From the fresh young lava beds of the Owyhee country to the water-and wind-eroded rocks that make our coastline so dramatic to the myriad columns and crags of the Columbia River Gorge: this was his terrain. In an introduction to Basalt Exposures, a catalogue accompanying a 1995 exhibition, Toedtemeier wrote, “Although basalt formations are common worldwide, the ones found in the Pacific Northwest are particularly varied and widespread. Resistant to erosion, basalt stands out in the landscape, forming rugged lava flows, craggy hillsides, rimrock, cliffs, and headlands. Because of the great variety and rich geologic history of the Northwest, these places are home to sea caves, lava tubes, peculiar stone arches, pillars, chasms, knobs, craters, and many other compelling forms.” The show is timed to coincide with an exhibition at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon. Terry Toedtemeier: Photographer looks at the full range of Toedtemeier’s work, from the 1970s to 2000s.” — Prudence Roberts

Friday evening plans?! Santa Anita / First Friday Art Opening @zacharyschomburg at @makerspacesellwood
Santa Anita is a recent series of paintings initially sparked by the colors and shapes Schomburg found in an old closed-off section of the Santa Anita racetrack on a recent trip there with his father in the spring of 2023.
7 of the paintings are now featured at Makerspace Sellwood. The series consists of 28 paintings and are a dedicated thinking-through of a small simple idea found in artists like #JosefAlbers, #EtelAdnan and #AgnesMartin. They’re vaguely #nostalgic, a nod to #colors and #patterns unintentionally preserved in time, and something he could imagine on the wall in the background of a Jaques Tati film.
🎧🎶DJ Computer Blue will be on the mix at the opening. Masks appreciated.

Peter Gronquist, Light Record
@elizabethleachgallery
First Thursday Reception: May 2, 5:30 - 7:30pm
May 2 - June 1, 2024
In this new body of work Gronquist has created a series of elegant, gestural #abstractions that seamlessly combine the fundamental compositional protocols of both #painting and #photography, while simultaneously questioning the categorical imperatives that seem to arbitrarily define and separate the two mediums.
Intrigued by the possibility of capturing and freezing something as ineffable and fugitive as a flicker of light, Gronquist set out to harness the basic elements of the photographic process and situate them within the more expressive, haptic tendencies of painting. The result is a near-perfect fusion of painting’s signature autographic “stroke” and the more anonymous, almost mechanic registration associated with the bulk of photographic reproduction and its myriad effects.
Beginning the process in a custom #diydarkroom of his own design, Gronquist used light sensitive photo-paper and a long, narrow LED light-stick as his respective canvas and paint brush. Equal parts conductor’s baton and necromantic wand, Gronquist wields the LED light-stick so that it becomes an extension of his own hand/eye/wrist relay-system or even a prosthetic appendage in its own right. Hovering over the blank photo-paper, the light glides across its frictionless surface in a kind of rhythmic, ritualized benediction.
Although there is no camera, no negative, and no actual photography involved, once Gronquist subjects the photo-paper to his own chemical process, vaporous images begin to materialize and take shape. Instantly calling to mind unfurling manuscripts, swirling musical notations. Gronquist is able to finesse and pull our eyes into a deep illusionistic space without the aid of receding horizon lines or any of the dimensional tropes commonly associated with #classicalpainting

Ryan Pierce, Improbable Springs
@elizabethleachgallery
First Thursday Reception: May 2, 5:30 - 7:30pm
May 2 - June 1, 2024
This is Ryan Pierce eighth show with the gallery. This exhibition, entitled Improbable Springs, is bursting with vibrant color and imaginative compositions as the artist repositions humanity’s role on earth. Pierce’s work stimulates the #imagination through the wide array of human objects which remain present while celebrating nature’s ability to carry on in spite of us.
Pierce has become known for his #climateconscious paintings depicting the near future where nature has begun to thrive again in the absence of humanity as we currently know it. The evidence of human beings are present only in the items left behind, now overrun and forgotten in tangles of vines or blooming flowers. Pierce’s work speaks to the resiliency of nature and these themes are carried on in his newest paintings.
Improbable Springs is primarily inspired by a six week hike Pierce went on in 2018, traveling from Phoenix, AZ to Silver City, NM. The natural springs scattered along the way were his primary source of water on his journey through the Southwest. The aesthetic of these secluded springs - sometimes marked by wayfinders such as fence posts, stacks of rocks or nothing at all - significantly influenced this new body of work. Water is depicted in many of the paintings, its significance undeniable. The imagery hints at the possibility of past flooding, lingering puddles, possible drought, spartan spigots amidst the wildflowers. There is something hopeful in a future where these springs still exist, that nature continues to persist in these significant ways despite the accelerating climate crisis.

Big Fan, rock’n’roll drawings by Rose Lewis
Opening May 12, 2024 from 4-8 PM
2220 SE Park Entrance St., Milwaukie, OR
The show will run through May 19, with viewings available by appointment. To make an appointment, contact Josephine via email jplacosta@gmail.com.
Big Fan represents a collection of works on paper by Portland-based artist and musician Rose@Lewis, encapsulating her paired obsessions with popular music and spirituality. ✨🎶 The exhibition is curated and hosted by Josephine LaCosta. The opening reception will feature a ritual led by local astrologer Chloe Margherita.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a zine that serves as both a map and explication of the work and an artwork in and of itself.
The drawings, prints, paintings, and collages in this exhibition literalize the idolatry inherent in the relationship between performer and fan by juxtaposing the iconography of popular music with the symbols of New Age spirituality and European occultism. We talk about worshiping our heroes and we describe famous musicians as idols. This reverent attitude has persisted even into the comparatively glamourless present, wherein the industry seems hell bent on convincing us that stars are just like us, despite abundant evidence to the contrary. The exhibition’s setting is in keeping with the punk spirit behind the work: it is, literally, a house show!

Alison Dougherty Solo Exhibit, Haiku D'etat...An Illustrated State of Mind. Curated by @undergroundrobin
📍Ford Gallery PDX 2505 Se 11th Ave Portland, OR
🗓️May 3 — July 21 2024
⏳Hours: All days 10-6 or by appointment
This project explores the technique of call and response. Alison had asked people to submit original haikus about moments in time, experiences they had about love, loss, a beautiful sunset, the wing of a songbird. She paints in response to these Haikus by drawing inspiration from their words. Using specific colors, textures and movement found in each poem. Ultimately illustrating their state of mind. In the end the haikus will become the titles of the paintings. This collaboration of mark making, melody of words echoed by brushstrokes of paint will be on view at the Ford Gallery PDX.
This evening is also a benefit for P:ear nonprofit. an incredible organization that work with homeless youth in arts, education and mentorship.
