We are looking to publish writing, that explores, questions, and facilitates cross-regional dialogue about contemporary art. Although our focus is primarily in the Pacific Northwest, we are interested in publishing writing exploring relevant themes and conversations across art & culture. Text submissions can be in the form of reviews and interviews relating to contemporary art.

Best practices

  • We prioritize efforts to highlight a broad range of artists - please search our published articles to ensure non-repetitive submissions.

  • Review submissions received close to the show closing date will likely not be considered (we aim to publish reviews with at least 14 days left to see an exhibition) please take this into consideration.

  • We do not publish incendiary or public relations pieces in our journal.

Types of Submissions

  • Reviews cover local and regional exhibitions.

  • Interviews with artists, gallerists, or creatives submissions should include a contextual introduction

How to submit

  • Provide a short statement of what you would like to write about with relevant press materials.

  • Briefly touch on why you want to write this article, and why we should consider it.

  • Send over a brief biography (200 words or less).

  • Email “PITCH[sample title]” to ashley@artandaboutpdx.com

Compensation

If your pitch is accepted, then we will negotiate a mutually acceptable length, deadline, and fee. Rates per piece are based on industry-standard set by the Working Artists and Greater Economy (W.A.G.E) and other resources. [1][2] Our Patreon directly helps to fund the compensation we offer to writers for articles.

Please keep in mind that Art & About reserves the right to terminate our acceptance of your proposal without compensation at any time. This can be due to several factors including, but not limited to; if you refuse to acknowledge feedback and edits from the editor, are unable to meet the agreed-upon deadline, and the final form of the piece diverges significantly from the agreed-upon topic or format. Once a piece is published, changes will not typically be made. This includes if the writer forgets to send us images or a biography. Only corrections to spelling - names/places - or relevant information will be considered for updating.

Conflict of Interest

Please be aware of conflicts of interest and how this will affect your submission.

  • The editorial team will not consider submissions by a writer whom the gallery or artist has commissioned to write the article in question.

  • We will likely refuse submissions in which a writer writes about their own work or the work of someone with whom the writer has a personal and/or financial relationship. Writers must disclose any such relationship when proposing their submission; to prioritize the integrity of the piece and the journal, any such relationship will be disclosed.

  • We will not typically cover exhibitions curated by, featuring, or including the work of any contributor or collaborator at Art & About. If a submission of this type is accepted our editorial team will clearly disclose its relationship to any artist or writer featured.
