Outer Space Gallery is pleased to present Tincture, an installation with projected visuals, textiles and printed work by Portland-based artist Anne Greenwood. For the exhibition, Greenwood furnished the space with hand-dyed fabrics stitched with horsehair made while she was in residence at the Icelandic Textile Center (Textílsetur Íslands) in Blönduós, Iceland. The artist will also feature a limited edition of hand-stitched books entitled ‘Vestiges’ that include folded, sewn, dyed, and printed crinoline pieces accompanied by text. Projected visuals will include a moving journal of seaweed, water, and wind collected while in Iceland, immersing the viewer in the sounds of the Icelandic coast. Combining her interests in art and science, Greenwood's work explores the shared geological landforms of Iceland and Oregon: mountainous, elemental, volcanic, fluvial and coastal; these landscapes are the platform upon which she explores the magical features of the natural world. Through the observation of landscape emerges a kind of divination. By exploring the layering of past and present, of the permanent and the ephemeral, this is a distillation of the artist's ancestral memory.
Greenwood’s artwork centers around history and connection: transforming personal and historical information, materials and textile items into sculptural images, objects, and books examining the confluence of nature, magic as well as the animism of place. Tincture is her first solo installation.
Materials: Willow and white poplar wood, black poplar essential oil, walnut ink, acrylic paint; repurposed fibers: horsehair, wool, cotton, linen, silk; new fibers: Tussah wild silk, crinoline; natural dyes: Osage orange, fustic, indigo, logwood, cochineal, and weld.
Techniques: fabric manipulation, natural dying, appliqué, knotting, machine and hand-stitching, ink and brush lettering, letterpress printing and video.
