Artist Statement

“My art has always drawn upon observing my fellow humans and then celebrating them in painted story pictures. During the pandemic I didn’t get to see as many humans out in the wild in their natural habitats so my primary source of inspiration has become less available. The work in this show has been shaped by this recent span of heightened isolation. These paintings both hail moments of joyous solitude and also call upon memories and fantasies of community and friendship. Many of my paintings are informed by my animation practice. I often build suggestions of movement and change into the static image. Inventing visual stylizations to suggest chronology is one of my favorite games to play while painting. In addition to the paintings, I am also sharing a series of small prints called Land Loops. These place-based portraits can be activated with augmented reality to reveal animated landscapes.”
