In Quiet As Granite, Los Angeles based artist Jon Chao shares a series of small works on canvas & paper in handmade walnut wood frames. focusing his practice on a limited range of colors & materials, his paintings depict imagery from the natural world: starry skies, jagged clouds, flowers, moths, trees.
in several pieces, these grounded elements shift into the surreal with the inclusion of flames (or roots) forming into pensive words, such as TRUE SELF & DEEP SILENCE, while in others, larger than life flowers float in space, aflame. through strong, simplified, & contemplative forms, a meditative language emerges, an invitation to share in the fleeting joy, wonder, & mystery found when we slow our pace to really see & feel the world around us.
