New Ownership, a hybrid physical and digital art exhibition, opens at Eutectic Gallery September 2, 2021, and showcases the works of nine Portland-based artists. The physical pieces are available for sale at the gallery, and can also be purchased via NFT online.
The show’s title, New Ownership, refers to the new ways of tracking provenance and chain of custody created by NFTs (Non-Fungible-Tokens). In this case, the NFT acts as a certificate of authenticity for the purchaser, and ensures the artist will receive a royalty in perpetuity if the work is ever re-sold.
New Ownership gives traditional artists and craftspeople a pathway into a sector that has largely been dominated by digital artists and illustrators, bridging the gap between the physical and digital art worlds by illuminating these emerging technologies for art consumers and enthusiasts alike.
The show, curated by Hannah Bakken, includes artists Shelby Baldridge, Sage Cortez, Emily Ginsburg, Josh Hughes, Shawna Lipton, Robert Maciel, Troy Matthews, Rachel Milstein, and Diego Morales-Portillo.
The work featured, primarily ceramics, plays with ideas of the natural and artificial, the handmade and mass-produced, and the blending of organic forms with digital aesthetics.
Calling attention to the artists’ labor in the process and production of the works, this show uses NFTs as a tool for problematizing the current gatekeeping and resource distribution within the art world. By utilizing decentralized blockchain technology, New Ownership aims to materially realize a more just and equitable financial future for artists and makers.
Brett Binford of Eutectic Gallery is excited to use the space’s platform to highlight independent artists exploring new opportunities for exposure, building community, and supporting their work enabled by blockchain technology.
The intention of the show is to educate and empower artists and collectors, with no prior cryptocurrency literacy required.
The exhibition will open on September 2, and runs through September 30, 2021. Eutectic Gallery requests that visitors be vaccinated and requires a mask at all times indoors.
