MURDOCH COLLECTIONS PRESENTS LYRICAL COHERENCE, AN EXHIBITION OF NEW PORCELAIN SURFACE ART BY SALLY SQUIRE & WIRE SCULPTURE BY ERIC BOYER

Murdoch Collections is pleased to present a symbiotic exhibition that brings together two accomplished Pacific NW artists, ceramic artist Sally Squire, and steel wire mesh artist Eric Boyer, in a joint show entitled Lyrical Coherence.
The lyricism invoked by the exhibition’s title refers to the individual artists’ unique expressions of form and movement in their artworks, cohesively brought together in a show both inspired by, and an ode to, both of their fathers. Boyer’s father was an elementary school teacher and Squire’s father was a doctor. Both were deeply involved in the appreciation of music.
The exhibit will showcase the ways in which both fathers passed along their love of music’s richness to each artist. These influences manifest clearly in the dynamic and rhythmic art forms highlighted in the exhibition. The gallery at Murdoch Collections has long been noted for its close relationships with, and support for, Pacific Northwest artists.
Marilyn Murdoch, Gallery Owner, has brought together two different artists’ work into a coherent visual experience that will highlight these influences while demonstrating their individual approaches in two-and-three-dimensional artwork.
Lyrical Coherence opens Saturday, August 14, 3:00PM, with a festive reception for both artists from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. This exhibition will be on display for 5 weeks, through Saturday, September 25, 2021.
About the artists:
Sally Squire’s new pieces represent a direction toward textured, lithe porcelain wall- mounted pieces in her signature sylph-like construction phrased with a rhythm that reflects her knowledge and passion for architecture, harmony and color. A full-time artist since 1998 with an extensive background in 3D art and mixed media, Squire has been working with porcelain for almost twelve years. In the past decade, porcelain has become a critical component in her artworks and visual expression. Her work is largely inspired by nature and Squire takes pride in her curiosity and willingness to invent techniques to achieve her vision. Squire’s art has been featured in a number of galleries, including Day in the Life Contemporary Craft Gallery (Portland) Murdoch Collections (Portland), and retailers including Design Furniture Gallery in Seattle, WA, Bedford Brown in Portland, and other retail establishments and galleries.
Eric Boyer started to explore metals in 1985, being employed for five years in a metal- working shop where he learned to forge, weld and fabricate decorative iron railings, furniture and other household items. Being fond of salvaged materials, he began to play with leftover scraps #8 mesh wire that was discarded from the assembly process. Having always been attracted artistically to the human and abstract form, both ethereal and practical, he began to sculpt. At first small and rather timid, these mesh sculptures began to attract attention, resulting in his first exhibition, in 1989, in Wilmington, Vermont.
Working with wire mesh continues to fascinate him after over thirty years. An exploration of the material itself, without subject, began to elbow out the figurative work, and is now leading him into new territory.
