Like Moss is a 2-person show of paintings, drawings, & weavings by portland based artists Lila Jarzombek & Maren Jensen. their works merge internal language & external influx through earthly imagery~ whirling rhododendrons, daisy chains, roots, & insect wings are tempered with an equal measure of discord: black cats, grinning jack o lanterns, smokey haze, & the grim reaper.
Lila & Maren’s new pieces play with & push the mediums of their previous work, unraveling a visual world that is resilient, intricate, & lush; inviting us to slow down & learn their nuanced stories.
These pieces are my first attempts at using colored pencils to draw on stretched linen. I’m fascinated by the blown-out and vibratory look that pencils make on the raw and untreated linen, incorporating a toothsome dimension to drawings of mine, referencing my weavings. Over the winter, I had flashes of drawings come to me while I was in the shower; I started calling them shower visions. Many of these shower visions are seen in this work. It feels like I am presented with an image outside of me, and my work is to make them visible. -MJ
After spending the past few years making mandala-like colored pencil drawings, I decided to take a break and return to oil painting. I wanted to loosen up and work more freely with form and color. This group of paintings is inspired by recent grid based drawings and colorful embroidered flower chains (scrap trim used for quilting). I love the simplicity and scale of the small floral forms. The repeated floral shapes created densely filled pattern structures. The compositions form slowly, going through many changes. These paintings do not point elsewhere, but rather establish their own velocity, connective tissues, & strange phenomena. They grow like moss, spreading & covering. -LJ
