AGENDA is pleased to announce its twelfth exhibition, Robert Donley: Hills on Fire, The Northwest Paintings from April 8, 2023 – May 13, 2023 at Luke’s Frame Shop, 4703 N Albina Ave, Portland, OR

Chicago-based, award-winning artist Robert Donley will showcase his work in Portland, Oregon in Hills on Fire: The Northwest Paintings. Curated by Jamie Wilson, the director of AGENDA. The opening reception is on April 8 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM and will be on display through May 13 at Luke’s Frame Shop at 4703 N. Albina. Called the “Chicago imagist Tolstoy” by Judith Wilson in the Village Voice, Donley’s paintings center on broad social and political statements.

The paintings in the exhibit are representative of Donley’s time living in the Pacific Northwest. A Portland resident since 2010, Donley’s Northwest paintings are shaped by the economic, social, and environmental changes he witnessed and are a departure from the urban imagery he has been most known for in Chicago and New York. These paintings, like so many of his others, are captured well by John Russell in the New York Times: ”You will have an approximate idea of the teeming and endlessly pugnacious human scene that Robert Donley sets before us  . . . It has the fascination of perpetual motion. Donley’s paintings appear in museums, galleries, and collections in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He has won numerous awards, including an NEA grant, the Mr. and Mrs. Frank G.

Logan Prize, and the Pauline Palmer Prize. His work has also been reproduced in numerous

publications, including national publications such as Art in America and Art Forum. He has also

been a judge for a special issue of U.S. News & World Report  titled, The Best of America, which honored individuals who had contributed significantly to the fields of education, science and technology, business, politics and government, and the arts. He is represented by Corbett v. Dempsey in Chicago.

Opening reception: 6-8 PM, Saturday 4/8/2023, Free. Beverages and light snacks are provided.
