AGENDA is pleased to announce its eighth exhibition, Gina Han: Recollection from September 18, 2021 – October 24, 2021.
Artist reception: Saturday 9/18/21 from 3-6PM.
In the latest iteration of rotating exhibitions at AGENDA, curator Jamie Wilson brings LA based artist Gina Han’s most recent work to the gallery in the culmination of a two-decade relationship between artist and curator. Since the last time Han’s paintings were shown the colors have leapt off the plane and entered three-dimensional space. Han’s compositions are recognizable as uniquely hers, yet the tight control once wielded has given way to change and chance.
The installation will include Han’s carefully hewn cubes, brightly displayed in plexiglass jewel boxes arranged in more complex compositions that sometimes bring to mind Damien Hirst’s medicine cabinets or Larry Bell’s transparent masterpieces. These works are not derivative of any specific work yet their immediacy and profound release of control feel important, challenging and joyous all at once. The installation will be housed in all white space where viewers will be invited to join the anthropomorphic cubes in confinement and re-arrange their loose peers to their hearts’ content.
A catalog will accompany the exhibition with thoughtful essay by Richard Speer. In Gina’s words, “Each of these artworks is offered as the beginning of many possible continuums, and the sculptural rearrangements of the participants manifest some of the infinite possible outcomes. Each outcome, in turn, could form the basis for future transformations. By yielding artistic control, I aim to facilitate an opening for unpredictable change and a space where pleasure and even joy can emerge naturally.”
