The Lobby Unveils “Between Two Points” Art Exhibit Featuring Acclaimed Works from Artists across the Globe
The Lobby, a boutique art gallery located at 2871 SE Division St. in Portland, will unveil its latest exhibit, “Between Two Points,” on Wednesday, May 10. The exhibit, thoughtfully curated by Sima Familant, runs through Oct. 15 and features pioneering works from artists Carmen Herrera, Maya Lin, Daniel Buren, Tsai Yin-Ju, Mary Weatherford, Jenny Holzer, Leon Polk Smith, and John Mason.
“The line is not specifically about the shortest distance,” Familant said about the premise of the latest exhibit, coming on the heels of “The Earth Laughs.” “This exhibit is more about what a line can do, what it can create, and how artists use this easily recognized visual form in different permutations, materials and arrangements.”
Whether it’s celebrated Cuban painter and sculptor Carmen Herrera’s straight-edge line of color or Jenny Holzer’s in-your-face redaction painting fighting against censorship, this exhibit is sure to surprise and delight the senses.
The wonderfully divergent collection features emerging artists like Tsai Yun-Ju, a 25-year-old Taiwanese artist fresh off her first exhibit in New York, and Herrera, the Havana-born minimalist painter who lived to 106.
The exhibit will also feature the river sculpture of acclaimed environmental artist Maya Lin, who achieved national recognition at age 21 when her design was selected in a competition for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
“This specific material encapsulates the entropy of nature, how this image of the river only exists in the moment, like a moment captured in a photograph,” Familant said of Lin’s sculpture. “And as with everything, it, too, will change.”
Celebrated French conceptual artist Daniel Buren’s renowned acrylic stained-glass work will further the theme “between two points” and radiate a sense of color throughout The Lobby’s inner eastside space. That light will perfectly complement Los Angeles artist Mary Weatherford’s colorful painting, where the line is made from neon and cuts through the painting plane.
Also displayed will be a piece by American abstract painter and follower of the Hard-edge painting Leon Polk Smith that introduces a single curving line creating two pictorial spaces. Smith continued this theme in later pieces as he experimented with more colors in oval, rectangular and square shapes.
Two small-scale works by artist John Mason, who helped expand the boundaries of ceramics by taking clay from craft to fine art, will also be featured. The pieces, called “orbs,” consist of 90-degree lines fitting together with no beginning or end yet always between two points.
The Lobby is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. or by appointment. Exhibits are free and open to the public.
About The Lobby
Located in the Ellen Browning Building, a luxury cohousing development on 2871 SE Division St., The Lobby is a boutique exhibition space dedicated to the community and carefully curated to encourage creativity, thoughtful design, and a sense of purpose and connection. Rotating every four to six months, the exhibitions feature works curated by Sima Familant with a personal lens from curating building owner Molly McCabe’s private art collection. Since The Lobby’s inception in May 2022, the space has been wholeheartedly committed to giving back to the community and the heart of the city. The founders were inspired to share beautiful highly curated art with passersby as a way to experience the beauty of contemporary art from a new vantage point, connect with artists from around the world, and escape the demands of everyday life.
