Gordon Barnes, Late Bloomer

  • Neu Haus Press RSVP for address (map)

Artist Gordon Barnes showcases his large body of print works at the inaugural exhibition for The Loft at Neu Haus Press, a new pop-up exhibition space within a non-traditional letterpress studio in the Brooklyn neighborhood.

Open for the weekend of April 16 - 18, 2021 by appointments through our Google Form: https://forms.gle/WDZFFjonLEMPCY4s7

Barnes intentionally combines traditional Japanese printmaking techniques with digital approaches to reprocess erotic photographs from decades ago. Images are digitally derived, edited, converted to halftones to make vinyl stencils to then be laboriously hand-carved and hand-printed. Through his labor of (re)production and devotional recording in defense of each image’s beauty, Barnes imbues respect and new relationships into images that are largely misunderstood and are meant to be consumed passively and quickly.
"That somewhat hazy, elusive quality is something I’ve tried to amplify whenever possible in this work (halftone, brushy ink, etc…) to empower it to resist its own consumption. They allude to the photographs they come from but they are not photographs and I want them to have the ability to escape you if you try to consume or control them too intensely. Basically I want them to be bold enough that you can’t ignore them, but abstract enough that if you try to look too closely they’ll just disintegrate into shapes. The tension in that dynamic feels generative and flirty in a way that I like."

Gordon Barnes is a mischievous and curious artist and educator working in Portland, Oregon who enjoys thinking deeply about the wrong things. After spending the last decade focused on his work as a member of the collaborative group Paintallica he is excited to share his first solo project in many years with you.

Neu Haus Press was founded in 1996 by Chris Chandler when he acquired his first Vandercook Press in Venice Beach, CA. Through the years his love, talent, knowledge and collection of this vintage craft has grown.
From 30 years working as a tour manager and sound engineer for bands he has had the privilege of sharing his passion of letterpress with musicians in collaborations with their art work.
The Loft at Neu Haus Press is a new endeavor between Chris Chandler and Studio Manager, Hannah Bakken, with a mission to exhibit local artists with print-centric works once a month in a pop-up fashion.
