Artist Statement:
Kaitlyn Carr is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Portland, Oregon with a practice rooted in process and personal narrative. Much of her work becomes a means to digest everyday experiences through meditative routines.
Navigating Race and Ethnicity is a paper collage series documenting shared memories and lived realities of an interracial relationship in rural Oregon. Each collage is carefully cut, layered and glued - allowing ample time for self-reflection on race and ethnicity, and how they’re ingrained in daily life. The studio becomes sanctuary for moments of intense, personal reflection.
Bright colors draw viewers in while the ambiguity of the figures and mundanity of the subject matter give others the chance to create their own meaning. Some of the memories are pleasant, others are not. Carr’s goal is for others to engage with her in thinking about race and its place in American society, especially in Oregon where this work is based.
Carr earned a BFA from Oregon State University in 2016 and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education from Black Hills State University in 2021. She taught visual and digital arts at a small, rural public school in NW Oregon for four years and has led collage, printmaking, and painting workshops across the Pacific Northwest.
