Static Age opens Saturday, Feb 29 from 6-9 pm.
Adopting the languages of painting, soft sculpture, and textiles, visual artist Alexis E. Mabry explores social stereotypes through observation, anecdote, and parody. Her work pulls from experiences both real and imagined; with an emphasis on exploration of feminine roles in male-dominated activities. Mabry collects stories, views, things she encounters in her community, and landscapes that resonate with shifting ideas of storytelling. She finds the idea of a person or object more compelling when it lives in the popular imagination, with a tenuous connection to lived reality. Objects that come with these territories are artifacts that hold memory and identity.
Alexis E. Mabry (b. 1985) grew up in Dallas, Texas. Mabry moved back to Texas after studying at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia (2011) and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond (2013). She is a 2019 BFA graduate from Texas State University. Recent exhibitions include “Childhood Memories” at FLAX Studio in San Antonio, Texas and “Everything Is Fine” at Meyers Street Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. “Static Age” will be her first time exhibiting work in Portland.
