Vanessa Englund
September 6th through September 27th
Opening reception: Thursday, September 6th from 6-9pm
Chingada Gallery presents a solo art exhibition, "Malleable When Under Certain Conditions" with artist, Vanessa Briones Englund. The exhibition will run from September 6th through September 27th, 2018 with an opening reception Thursday, September 6th from 6-9PM.
Vanessa Briones Englund is a California native who recently moved to Portland, Oregon from Los Angeles, California. As a third generation Filipina-American experiencing the ramifications of assimilation into American culture from generations back, her research and work look for ways to reconnect with Filipino culture while simultaneously embracing her American identity through abstract sculptural objects of permanence and impermanence. Vanessa is an MFA of Visual Studies candidate in the Low-Residency program at Pacific Northwest College of Art. She studied art at the Santa Monica College of Art in Southern California through the Artist Mentor Program and also has a background in K-12 education. She has shown work in Los Angeles, California; Portland, Oregon; and Washington, D.C. Vanessa is also involved in curatorial work with her projects and/or and Borrowed Space.
Vanessa connects disparate materials by building webs and membranes of complexity on structures of simplicity. Materials include crocheted yarn, found sweaters, tile grout, and steel armatures. She thinks about memory, performativity, ancestry, materiality, and narrative. These bodily and architectural forms are both frozen in time and in a constant state of flux. Vanessa finds harmony in moments of tension within dialectical relationships.
