On Friday, November 5, 2021, One Grand Gallery is honored to present “MULTIPLY”, a solo exhibit by Portland based artist Christine Miller.
Opening night will take place on Friday November 5, 2021, at 7pm PST at 1000 E Burnside St, Portland, OR 97214. The gallery will offer a press hour beginning at 6pm PST with snacks and an opportunity for a meet and-greet with Christine Miller. Straight from New York, DJ Passport will play a NY Summer Backyard BBQ Vibe and beverages will be served.
Christine Miller introduces “MULTIPLY” a material design story using the Pan African Flag and its representation of black nationalism and the advocacy of union of all the people across the diaspora. Presented as a collection of three flags representing themes: Durable, Sturdy and Functional, these flags are fueled by personal stories, design intentionality and Black Love. Black Love is Black Power and Black Power is an armor against White Supremacy.
Christine pulls inspiration from the book “All About Love” by Bell Hooks as well as the phrase “We don’t die, we multiply”. Christine reflects on the choice and action to love; the willingness to nurture oneself or someone else’s spiritual well-being. “In a country and world that has shown such hatred toward black people with the prominent presence of white supremacy reinforcing that hatred – I believe black people loving and nurturing themselves along with making a deliberate choice to love each other is the ultimate power.” - Christine Miller
Christine’s exhibit uses imagery and language of overt racism with a subtlety that comments on covert racism. Varying visuals show the layered definitions of the word MULTIPLY and dichotomy between the two notions of power: Ownership vs Domination.
Christine Miller (b. 1990, New York, NY, she/her) is a conceptual artist and curator currently based in Portland, OR. Her work centers around racial imagery, products and histories while simultaneously reframing her own cultural identity. Miller holds a B.A from Hunter College (2013), and AA in Textile Surface Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology (2016). Christine Miller brings her first solo show to the Portland community after participating and curating shows with other galleries such as Blackfish, Fuller Rossen and Tips on Failing.
One Grand Gallery, founded in 2012, is a contemporary art and design gallery, publisher, and agent of creative instigation.
