As Above, So Below: Maria Lux + Kyle Peets

  • Carnation Contemporary North Interstate Avenue #3 Portland, OR, 97217 United States (map)

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 4 from 5-8 pm

Whether it’s looking upwards to alien flying squirrels in the sky, or downwards to anthropomorphized rocks underfoot, artists and colleagues Maria Lux and Kyle Peets seek the weird, humorous, and miraculous. In their dual exhibition, As Above, So Below, rocks become extra-terrestrial, and UFO-squirrels become terrestrial as thought circles from the ground to the sky and back. The gesture of listening to the unknown and the spirit of the imaginary, attempts – in flawed terms – to generate empathy. Play and the suspension of disbelief are used to shift perspectives towards the more-than-human to destabilize hierarchical ways of looking at, then acting in the material world.

Maria Lux (b. 1984) is a research-driven artist who makes installation-based works centering on the way animals are used to generate human knowledge and understanding. Originally from the Midwest, she earned her BFA from Iowa State University and her MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Lux is an associate professor of art at Whitman College in Walla Walla, W.

Kyle Adam Kalev Peets (b. 1984) is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work harnesses moments beyond meaning as spaces filled with the opportunity to use humor, mischief, and poetry to critique dominant narratives/conventions. He received his MFA in Printmaking and a graduate certificate in Book Arts from the University of Iowa in 2015. Kyle currently teaches Print and Book Arts at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.
