Artist Talk with Lenka Clayton

Wednesday, April 18, 2018, from 6:308 PM

This event is free and open to the public

EXHIBITION INFORMATION

Join us for an evening with Lenka Clayton, artist and founder of the An Artist Residency in Motherhood. Her interdisciplinary work considers, exaggerates, and alters the accepted rules of everyday life, extending the familiar into the realms of the poetic and absurd.

The Guggenheim Museum's Social Practice Art Initiative recently commissioned Clayton and collaborator Jon Rubin to produce a new work entitled ...circle through New York. The artists arranged for an essential element from six sites along an imaginary circle to circulate from one place to the next, creating a six-month network of social and material exchange.

ARTIST INFORMATION

In her work, Lenka Clayton has searched for and photographed every person mentioned by name in a German newspaper; worked with artists who are blind to recreate Brancusi’s Sculpture for the Blind from a spoken description, and reconstituted a lost museum from a sketch found in an archive. She is the founder of An Artist Residency in Motherhood, a self-directed, open-source artist residency program that takes place inside the homes and lives of artists who are also parents. There are now almost 500 current artists-in-residence in 36 countries participating in the program. She is also known for her ongoing series of typewriter drawings.

Clayton has received a Pittsburgh Foundation/Heinz Endowments Creative Development Grant, a Sustainable Arts Foundation Award and in 2014 was presented a Carol R. Brown Award for Creative Achievement. She has taught at institutions in the U.K., US, and Sweden, and in 2008 was the Theodore Randall International Chair at Alfred University in New York. From 2014-2017 she was Artist in Residence at The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. In summer 2017 she was artist-in-residence at Headlands Center for the Arts in California. Clayton lives and works in Pittsburgh, PA.

This event is sponsored by the PSU School of Art + Design's Art and Social Practice Program, the PSU CORE Program, the PSU Speaker's Board, and the Social Practice Club.
