Rubus Discolor Project is pleased to present Always Yours & Mine, a solo exhibition of recent works by Melina Bishop.
The show runs from June 11 - July 11, 2021 — EXTENDED to July 25 — and is open by appointment only. The artist will be present on Sunday, June 13 from 11 - 2 pm. Masks required (thank you!), please submit a form to schedule your visit.
This is the third installation of an ever-evolving collection of sculptural forms that the artist refers to as “an inanimate family.” These sculptures were made during a year of social isolation in Vancouver, BC. Bishop worked alone in a corner of her kitchen in a small apartment, utilizing cast-off materials including foam, plaster, old bedsheets, papier-mâché, and cardboard. Seeking connection in a disembodied life mediated by screens, Bishop channeled care and affection towards the lively-yet-inanimate sculptures that became her proxy family.
The works share a formal and material vocabulary. They reference elements of daily life—a table, a shelf, a bowl, a chair—while upending our usual expectations of the utilitarian. Although characteristic of household objects, their soft forms and pale palette allow flexibility. Bishop asks for alternative methods of understanding objects and materials, and their relationship to us, by rejecting the assumption of what an object is or does.
Melina Bishop is a sculptor and installation artist. She has shown independently with Vignettes at Generations (Seattle, WA) and her work has been included in group exhibitions at Praxis Fiber Gallery (Cleveland, OH), Soil Gallery (Seattle, WA), Rubus Discolor Project (Portland, OR), and Surplus Space (Portland, OR). She was a 2016 resident artist at the Icelandic Textile Center (Blönduós, IS) and a member of the studio collective Neighbors at the Yale Union (Portland, OR) from 2015 to 2019. She graduated from Oregon College of Art and Craft with a BFA in Fibers in 2015 and from Emily Carr University of Art and Design with an MFA in Visual Art in 2021.
