ON SCREEN: Band of Outsiders (Bande à part)

1964. Directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Runtime: 1hr 35min. Not Rated.

Cinephile slackers Franz and Arthur spend their days mimicking the antiheroes of Hollywood noirs and Westerns while pursuing the lovely Odile. The misfit trio upends convention at every turn, be it through choreographed dances in cafés or frolicsome romps through the Louvre. Eventually, their romantic view of outlaws pushes them to plan their own heist, but their inexperience may send them out in a blaze of glory—which could be just what they want.

ON STAGE: Art & About

Founded in 2014,  Art & About is an editorial‑driven platform documenting exhibitions and art‑centered events across the Pacific Northwest and beyond, with a deliberate love for Portland, Oregon. With an eye toward the contemporary and the under‑recognized, Art & About highlights emerging and established artists, champions alternative and artist‑run spaces, and amplifies the work of local creative communities in Portland and further afield.

Art & About is run entirely by  Ashley Gifford, whose curatorial and editorial vision shapes everything from the platform’s voice and point of view to its commitment to accessibility, community, and thoughtful cultural documentation. Working independently, Gifford treats Art & About as a living archive—connecting artists, audiences, and the art‑curious through sustained attention to place, practice, and an ever‑shifting cultural landscape. Gifford’s writing on art and culture has also appeared in Willamette Week, PDX Parent, Oregon ArtsWatch, Ceramics Now, and other publications and news outlets.
