Third Angle New Music presents The Decibel Series - Yawa

  • Decibel Sound & Drink 11380 Southeast 21st Avenue Milwaukie, OR, 97222 United States (map)

This Fall, Third Angle New Music returns to Decibel Sound & Drink on select Sunday afternoons for laid-back electronic music sets and craft cocktails. This season’s Decibel Series features Casual Decay on Aug. 13, Branic Howard on Sep. 17, Yawa on Oct. 22, and Methods Body on Nov. 12. The performances begin on their respective days at 4:30PM and run approximately 60 minutes without intermission. Audience members are encouraged to reserve tickets early, as space is limited. All Decibel Series Shows are 21-and-over.

Third Angle Executive Director Carissa Burkett writes, “Decibel Sound & Drink has such great ambiance which adds so much to the experience of these shows. It feels like getting to hang out with incredible musicians in someone’s really well-decorated living room with a bunch of other music lovers…and then someone hands you a fancy cocktail. Here at Third Angle we love creating experiences and this one is cozy, delicious, and stimulating.”

The Decibel Series kicks off with Casual Decay, the ambient electronic project of Jon Nasrallah inspired by ecological systems and cellular activity. Nasrallah uses a variety of synthesizers and sampling techniques to approximate the dynamics of the natural world and craft an organic soundscape. Sun, Aug 13, 2023 / 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM – Casual Decay

Branic Howard regularly appears with Third Angle behind-the-scenes as an audio engineer, and he now takes the stage to present his own compositions. Howard’s work examines how a place is related to its sonic environment, relating the “space” within the music to its surroundings. Sun, Sep 17, 2023 / 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM – Branic Howard

Yawa is the solo project of Amenta Abioto. Using her voice, kalimba, synthesizer, drum machine and guitar she weaves looping, atmospheric textures. Her music invokes theatrical surprise and the sounds of the African diaspora. Sun, Oct 22, 2023 / 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM – Yawa

Methods Body is the latest project from John Niekrasz and Luke Wyland whose other duos include the heavily lauded projects AU and Why I Must Be Careful. In Methods Body, the duo creates subliminal melodies and uncanny grooves from sounds recorded in old-growth forests and remote deserts. Sun, Nov 12, 2023 / 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM – Methods Body

Third Angle launched the Decibel Series in Spring 2023 with the goal of allowing audiences to experience adventurous sounds from local musicians in a casual, intimate space. The small space allows the musicians to tell stories, interact with the audience and talk about what inspired their work.

Third Angle New Music’s mission is to perform, present, and record adventurous contemporary sonic works while commissioning new works from a diverse spectrum of composers.

Since its founding in 1985, Third Angle has created and presented more than 200 events, commissioned more than 90 new works, and released 15 recordings to critical acclaim. Sound of the Five: the chamber music of Chen Yi, was named a top 10 recording for 2009 by National Public Radio.

Third Angle’s roguish programming crafts experiences that are mind-altering by design, including concerts created to work in harmony or dissonance with their environment, wildly divergent repertoire, and a blending of the arts that redefines the genre.

At a Third Angle performance, you never know quite what will happen next.
