Jake Scharbach, Collision Repair

  • FROELICK GALLERY 714 Northwest Davis Street Portland, OR, 97209 United States (map)

Collision Repair, is Froelick Gallery’s second solo exhibition with Jake Scharbach, sees the New York-based painter continuing- with pointed critique as well as reverence for materials and surfaces - to mine images from the long-dominant Western art historical canon. He creates strange and compelling portraits mashed-up from features seemingly sliced from texts (or museum walls) and strewn with the contents of one’s pockets or waste bin, evidence of one’s vices (beer, drugs, cigarettes, candy, smartphone paraphernalia), and disarming flashes from contemporary news sources. A large canvas places Titian’s Sisyphus- the eternal laborer- in a charred landscape, face obscured by an impressively trompe l'oeil garbage bag, as objects rain from the sky and pile up on the ground in a lavish, anarchic rummage sale for centuries of Eurocentric high-and-pop-culture.

Please virtually join us on Thursday, December 3 at 5:30 pm for a live broadcast on Facebook and YouTube with Jake Scharbach in conversation.
