Ampersand is pleased to present Spiritual Good Time, an exhibition of new works by Dennis Foster. “My studio sits in Northeast Los Angeles,” Foster says, reflecting on his recent paintings, “a few blocks west of the first freeway built in the United States. There’s an orange tree outside I sit under that must be 50 years old—great for juicing, not so great for peeling. In the evenings I walk the hilly neighborhoods with my partner and dog and watch the hawks and falcons hunting while the light falls golden on the nearby National Forest. I find the daytimes here great for daydreaming and nights suitable for working. Much of my painting takes place then. I think of some of this work as long drives with plenty of time for self-reflection and projection. Others merely a rest stop. Geographically, where I'm making this work is evident in the imagery. The consistency of the sun setting visibly. The edge of the world, center of my universe. In a desert, under the sun.”
Dennis Foster lives and works in Los Angeles, California. He studied photography at Pacific Northwest College of Arts. His recent exhibitions include Green Flash Where the Grass Grows Greener here at Ampersand in 2020 and Jellying at Legion Projects.Visitor information: Fri-Sun 11A-4P
