Carola Penn, THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

  • ArtReach Gallery at First Congrational UCCC 1126 Southwest Park Avenue Portland, OR, 97205 United States (map)

We are pleased to announce Carola Penn's exhibit THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, at ArtReach Gallery, curated by Dr. Sheldon Hurst. This show highlights Penn's paintings from her Second Childhood series, and includes previously unseen sketches and studies from her notebooks, as well as "Self Portrait as My Mother" (a painting from 20 years prior that foreshadow these personal, reflective works).

Penn’s work featured in THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS is built around childhood memories of parents, siblings, fantasy and evolving forms of feminine ideals. Her explicit references to Van Gogh illuminate the influence of the Dutch master on her practice but also provide playful renderings of how we process these influences in our lives, self-mythologies and dreams.

Carola Penn was a creative force in Portland’s visual arts ecology of the last 40 years before passing in 2019. Her work often provided insight and commentary on the region’s environmental issues, urban development, and social injustices. Recent exhibits include Fragments at Stumptown downtown, Woodlands at the Portland International Airport. and Who Am I, Anyway? at Nationale.
