mood I

Introducing a new series called, a mood. In this feature, we've invited artists to share images, either of their own or from others that inspire them, on our blog and Instagram.

A short piece of writing; a description of the mood board, a poem, or other writing may be included by the artist, as well as a music playlist or other aspects of ephemera related to the artist’s vision. We recommend listening to playlist in the order they are curated while browsing images.

We’re starting out this new series with film photographer and poet Alexandra Gómez.

My name is Alexandra Gómez, a film photographer, and poet based in Portland, Oregon. My mood board is part homage and part daydream, an ode to every life I’ve lived. Influences from my family’s island of Puerto Rico, my adopted country of Spain, the thick breath before touch, and the quiet moments of ritual all helped to shape this self-portrait. The playlist goes nicely with a glass of wine, open windows, most kinds of kiss, and the freedom of a body coming back home.

afternoon wine by Alexandra Gómez

i suppose it is afternoon, and the light pours in just the way you like it. a fresh cup of coffee or a glass of red wine, really your pick. somewhere there is the faint smell of vanilla and vetiver. dark hair wet from the shower you took to wash away anything that is not yours. there is a poem hanging on the wall. you are naked save for the pair of gold hoops your abuelita reminded you to keep safe, to hang above your bed for good luck. you sway with the warm breeze holding your body like a body is a body. you think about how to love somebody. fingers reach for the blood orange on the counter.

a coy smile spreads. your lips are swollen from dancing with him all night.
